Introducing ReactOS: The Open-Source OS with Windows Compatibility

The ReactOS project has just released their latest newsletter, showcasing the impressive progress they’ve made in recent months towards creating a free software operating system with compatibility for Windows device drivers and applications. With 22 years of development under their belt, ReactOS is making significant strides towards achieving compatibility with Windows Server 2003 and newer versions of Microsoft Windows. Although there is no set timeline for their next release, ReactOS 0.4.15, the team is constantly working towards this goal.

Exciting Developments at ReactOS

Some of the most recent accomplishments by the ReactOS team include major improvements to kernel debugging, ongoing efforts to improve UEFI boot capabilities for a wider range of hardware, and enhancements to the user interface and shell. Additionally, the team is hard at work on implementing better support for Microsoft DirectX and preparing for compatibility with NT6+ applications, which will greatly improve support for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and the latest, Windows 11. While the NT6+ compatibility is still in the experimental stage, progress is being made on all fronts.

More ReactOS News

In addition to these exciting developments, ReactOS is also working on an improved GUI setup process and has successfully booted on the Valve Steam Deck thanks to their UEFI improvements and hardware compatibility efforts. Although much of their development and testing is done within virtual machines, the team continues to make impressive strides towards creating a fully functional and user-friendly open-source operating system.
